Today is exciting in so many ways:
1. I leave for VEGAS tonight!
2. I get to share another part of the Matt and Pre Love Story (better known as #MattLovesPre amongst my friends and family. Also the official instagram hashtag.)
Last week when I shared the story of “How I Met My Husband,” I got so many wonderful comments. Thank you all for your sweet words! Today, you get the next installment: The Proposal.
For the majority of our relationship, I would say that I did most of the planning. And when I say most, I mean all. That being said you can imagine the insane amount of joy I felt when Matt executed a beautiful and perfectly planned proposal.
The story of our proposal weekend starts in Detroit, Michigan. We traveled to the Mitten to attend the wedding of Matt’s cousin. We had planned our trip so that we could spend the weekend in the Detroit area for the wedding and then drive up to Northern Michigan to spend the remainder of the week with Matt’s mom. The wedding was an absolute blast! We had the most incredible time with Matt’s family.
We headed up to Northern Michigan on Sunday and by the time we arrived on Sunday evening, Matt was seriously sick. Possibly the worst cold I have ever seen him come down with. This was unfortunate because he had planned to take his mom out for a massage the next day and to spend some quality mother/son time with her.
The next morning came and he woke up feeling slightly better so off he went with his mom. Matt’s sisters and I ran some errands, including a strategically planned trip to the nail salon where I enjoyed a quick color change [I had recently gotten a manicure].
By the time we arrived back at the house, Matt and his mom had gotten back. He claimed he was feeling much better and wanted to go geocaching, specifically to share a cache he had found with his little sister last summer. Off we went, in search of hidden treasures along the shore of Lake Michigan. We wasted quite a bit of time searching for a few caches that we just couldn’t find. Finally, Matt announced that he knew of one that was just spectacular, a must find. We ventured down a trail path along the shoreline of Lake Michigan and when I inquired about the distance of the cache [we were using an App, of course!] I learned that we were only 156 ft away! The excitement was building until I caught a glimpse of Matt’s phone and realized that we were actually 325ft away and that we were going in the wrong direction!
I pointed this out to him but he asked me to trust him, he knew where he was going. I obliged and followed him into the woods, a few feet later we were in front of a gazebo filled with lots of tiny tea light candles.
I caught my breath and said “Oh! This is beautiful…is this part of a resort?”
I spun around and Matt’s little sister had disappeared.
He reached for my hands and said:
“Pre, I love you so much. We have been together for 4 years and 4 months. You have changed my life and made me a better person. I love you. Will you spend the rest of your life with me?
He slipped the ring on my finger, and the tears came down my cheeks.
I’m pretty sure I whispered “YES!” before I squealed and pulled him in for a hug.
It was magical and it was beautiful. And just when I thought the moment couldn’t get any better…it did.
To Be Continued…
