I get asked this question a lot: Is organic food really better for me? Is it worth it?
My immediate answer is Yes! My rationale is this: the less the toxins you’re exposed to, the better off you are. Why eat foods laden with pesticides? There are better options out there.
A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition that concluded that organic foods are better for you. In fact, they’re better for you because they’re more nutritious.
The results of meta-analyses of the extensive data set of 343 peer-reviewed publications indicated that organic crops and processed crop-based foods have a higher antioxidant activity and contain higher concentrations of a wide range of nutritionally desirable antioxidants/(poly)phenolics, but lower concentrations of the potentially harmful, toxic metal Cd. For plant secondary metabolites, this confirms the results of the meta-analyses carried out by Brandt et al.(20), which indicated that there are significant composition differences between organic and conventional crops for a range of nutritionally relevant compounds…
Researchers also found that conventionally grown crops have pesticide residues that are four times higher than organically grown crops. What this tells us is that switching to an organic diet would increase poly phenol and antioxidant consumption by 20-40%; which is the equivalent to eating one or two extra servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Antioxidants and poly phenols play a vital role in preventing chronic diseases influenced by oxidative stress including cancer, heart disease, premature aging and diabetes.
It’s nice to have evidence supporting the consumption of organic food – it makes it easier to spend the extra money on those organic fruits and veggies when you know you’re supporting a healthier lifestyle.
